Azilal Rugs

The collection

Azilal rugs come from the high plateaus of the Azilal province in the High Atlas mountains, one of the most remote weaving regions in Morocco. They are the most expressive of all Moroccan rug traditions: abstract shapes, colourful symbols, and freehand marks woven onto an ivory ground by Amazigh women who use no pattern or template. Each symbol carries meaning, from protection to harvest to family, though the language is personal to the weaver and rarely written down. There is no other rug quite like it.
